Creating A Transparent Solid (by Namh)
Hi Everybody,
I'm new to SS. I need a sketch that describes some water inside an acrylic pipe. Is there anyway to create the acrylic pipe which is transparent using SS? I have been trying to do this myself, but still get no clue.
regards,
Namh

Currently there is no transparency in solvespace. The best option with the current feature set would be a cutaway.

I don't think the feature of allowing for transparency is undoable. However with the oddities of OpenGL there would need to be some rewriting of the draw code to separate opaque from translucent objects, sort both sets and draw them in a specific order.
My 2 cents ... (by Roland Frank)
Honestly, I would model pipe and water in Solvespace and export via OBJ-File Format to a Freeware Raytracer like
POVRAY: http://povray.org/
or
Kerkythea: http://www.kerkythea.net/cms/
and do all visual stuff there.

My fork (https://github.com/whitequark/solvespace/tree/for-upstream-2) has support for transparency, but be advised that it changes savefile format, so only the modified solvespace will be able to read them.

Shouldn't a change like that be shelved for a while? It's good to queue up changes that would alter the file format and do them all at once. Of course that requires long term planning so you can identify a number of such things. OTOH if you can read the old files then I guess it doesn't mater too much.
This raises the question, is there a development roadmap for SolveSpace, or are there not enough people yet?

whitequark's changes can be made without breaking (forwards or backwards) the file format, per my discussion with him offline. I think he's planning to do that.
There's no formal roadmap. If you'd value something then certainly suggest it, but no guarantees on when or whether it gets implemented.

I wouldn't mind some minor list of ideas being maintained.
I have a few ideas that I haven't had time to look into. This transparency work by whitequark is great as I had started digging into it but only got about 1/2 way before I had to pull off.

Hey, Whitequark
Just built your new transparency and the text window is just colored blocks
Windows 8 - Nvidea Geforce GT 730
