Linux packages? (by Bob Pendleton)
Are you planning to release in any or all of span, flatpak, or appimage? I don't really care which. It would be more convenient for us linux users.
Of course, the web version makes any OS specific packaging a waste of time. But, until that is stable up to date packages would be great to have.
Thanks

There is an official Debian package, but it looks like it's still at version 3.1. On Fedora you can try the latest QT version (3.2) in a COPR repository here:
https://copr.fedorainfracloud.org/coprs/wickedsmoke/apps/
There is also a SNAP package but that is also stuck at version 3.1.
There is also a flatpak on flathub which looks like it's also at v3.1
People volunteer to create these packages and then move on. The only one I *expect* to update for sure is the Debian one, but I can't predict when.
The solvespace build system has had changes over the years in support of building those packages, but building them is not something we do upstream. It should be relatively easy for those external packages to be updated - perhaps the maintainers just didn't get the memo that a new version is out.

I would assume maintaining the flatpak and strongly encouraging folks to use it would be the least effort for future releases. As for the time being, I'll point out that the OpenSuse Science repo also has an up to date version.

Containerized apps like Flatpak and AppImage should only be used as a last resort as they use much more disk space & memory than native OS packages and don't integrate well into the desktop.
Some native packages for solvespace-qt are available here:
https://github.com/WickedSmoke/solvespace_qt5/releases
While containers are a poor way to distribute programs, they are a great way for developers to build native packages. Personally I'd like to to see even smaller projects like Solvespace take on this task themselves. I'm setup to build Fedora, Debian, & Ubuntu packages from a single RPM .spec file so hitting the main distros is fairly easy.

Actually, the CI process does a flatpak build. I'm not sure why this doesn't make it into the downloads...
