extruding (by Norman Elliott)
I am completely new to parametric 3d cad. I have only used tinkercad in the past. I saw an old series of tutorials by skybluedesigns. They seemed to be very good. So I set the first one running on my Tablet and followed it on my laptop. Everything worked fine until it came to extruding. It complains about activating a workplane to extrude and says "Activate a workplane (Sketch->in Workplane) before extruding" So I try that and then it says " No workplane selected activating default workplane for this group " But I am back to not being able to select the workplane!
I really thought I could learn this as the tutorials seemed to be so easy for a complete beginner to understand. I've searched and searched but nowhere can I find out HOW to do it. They all just say do it.

When you start Solvespace it defaults to sketching in a workplane. As long as you don't change that, your sketch will be in a workplane and you can extrude it any time just by using the menu NewGroup->Extrude.
If you have started sketching in 3D then it's likely you will not be able to extrude your sketch. There can be a lot more to this, but for a beginner you should always use a sketch in workplane followed by extrude/revolve/lathe to create 3D objects.
