Extrude many different lengths from one sketch? (by wolfv)
I have a project that uses many wooden 2x4s of various lengths.
Is there a way to extrude many 2x4s of various lengths and orientations from one sketch?

Thank you.

One option is to sketch the cross-section in a file alone. Then create a new file for each length, link the cross-section, and extrude it. Parametrized parts would be nice, but AFAIK aren't available.

Thanks Tom. That worked!

Here are the step-by-step details:
- sketch the cross-section of 2x4 alone in file 2x4.slvs
- in new file, for each 2x4
- link the cross-section
New Group > Link / Assemble... > 2x4.slvs
- constrain 2x4 profile to XY plane orientation
Constrain > Same Orientation
- select a workplane parallel to 2x4 profile (can be offset from 2x4 profile)
click on XY plane
Sketch > In Work Plane
- extrude profile normal to XY plane
New Group > Extrude

Yes, the 2D sketch can be linked many times and each one extruded to different length.

I had considered the possibility of having a single group type for that (link and extrude 2D section) which would allow re-orienting and positioning as well as changing the extrusion length.

That would be inferior to having actual parametric parts, which we hope to have at some point. OTOH I think the parametric parts will require setting the length (parameter) in the text window vs dragging and constraining which the above idea would allow.
