could the export scale be used to compensate for pla shrinkage when exporting an stl for 3d printing (by E A)
If I have a model drawn as I want it, could I compensate for PLA shrinkage (lets say 1.8% by setting the export scale to 1.018 before exporting the STL file?

I think so. You could also apply different scale for different models by creating an assembly that links the part with the scale you want.

For 3d printing, I would scale in the slicer, I use Prusaslicer which allows different percentages for each axis.

Thanks guys! 2 great answers.
@ Tom I noticed yesterday that every time you create a link group, you can set a scale.
And that awakened me to the idea that one could create a test for slicing by linking the same file multiple times at different scale factors. That could be a time saver for small parts that need close tolerances.

@ Andrew Your answer reveals how much of a novice I am at this stuff. I do not have a 3d printer, therefore never used a slicer. I can see where scaling each axis could be required in some models.

I have been learning by creating a cavity mold, and in thinking about shrinkage, wondered if the cavity would actually grow when the PLA shrinks.

I cannot help you on the shrinkage. However another reason for doing shrinkage adjustments in the slicer is that shrinkage varies with PLA composition and extrusion and bed temperatures. Changing the PLA brand or color can alter shrinkage, and is the bane of anybody trying to make Lego.
