step file unusable (by Tony)
Hi,
I made a part, but when I try to read the exported step file into the cnc machine website, it fails, it also fails to import into freecad. Step file is there, 737k of stuff. STL file works. Solvespace part file attached.
System:
Solvespace v 2.3
Release Linux Mint 20 Ulyana 64-bit
Kernel Linux 5.4.0-125-generic x86_64
MATE 1.24.0
AMD Athlon(tm) II X4 630 Processor × 4
Thanks,
Tony
step file:
ISO-10303-21;
HEADER;
FILE_DESCRIPTION((''), '2;1');
FILE_NAME(
'output_file',
'2009-06-07T17:44:47-07:00',
(''),
(''),
'SolveSpace',
'',
''
);
FILE_SCHEMA (('CONFIG_CONTROL_DESIGN'));
ENDSEC;
DATA;
<<<snip>>>
ENDSEC;
END-ISO-10303-21;
End of the step file.

I installed v3 under wine with the same result.

This is a god awful mesh, the worst mesher I have seen.

I have never had trouble reading our step files in FreeCAD and have used it to fix them.
The STEP issue has been discussed and some work done here:
https://github.com/solvespace/solvespace/issues/206
You'd need to build nanoants code, or find someone to do so. It's definitely on the radar but not done for want of developer time.
As for the mesh, I'm not sure why there is red on such a simple part design. Something seems wrong. And the mesh quality might get improved in the future. It is good enough for rendering and usually for slicing.
These are areas I'd be happy to tackle if I could work on Solvespace full time.

Hi Paul,
Ive been meshing since 1988, back then we did it by hand, making points for FEM. 3D modeling since 1993 with SDRC I-deas. I was taken back at some of the trapezoid aspect ratios in this model. I can't complain since its free software. Sorry, I dont know how to code. I can make a 2d dxf file and have the part laser cut, which is fine.
Thank you,
Tony

@Tony
The .slvs file you attached above opens fine for me in Solvespace. I was also able to export surfaces as STEP and then open that in FreeCAD with no problem. My step file is only 344k in size.
The PNG you show with the red surfaces and triangle mesh is a different version of the part with the corners not square. Is that the one that the step file fails on?
If you're having mesh failures (not just an ugly mesh) you might try changing the chord tolerance settings. I find the default of 0.1 percent works quite well for most things.
