Active workplane restricts shown ones (by Hinell)
This limitation drives me crazy. Why can't we have shown checkboxes be independent of the active workplane? Is there any related issue on github?

Show is independent of active, but is only available up to and including the active group. Ant groups after the active group are not shown, so it does not make sense to allow manipulation of the show. The show state of groups is preserved if an earlier group is made active. Note there is a strict dependency order between groups, and it is not possible to use a latter group as a reference in an earlier group.
