Newbie 3D questions (by Aliman)
I have used Solvespace for some time to produce 2D parametric drawings and am now trying my hand at 3D. I attach an image of an open-fronted box done in Sketchup which I want to reproduce in Solvespace so as to gain the parametric facility. However I have encountered three problems;-
(1) If I start with a 2D side profile incorporating the (adjustable) 20 deg. tilt at top, then extrude to create a front-view showing the width, I can't delete the front plane so as to create the open front. Is this a Solvespace limitation that necessitates performing some sort of Boolean subtraction procedure?
(2) When saving the front view to a new group I get stuck in 'wire-frame' mode and can't get the 'shaded view of a solid model' to show.
(3) Any dimensions I add show up as REF, so can't be adjusted.

This is all very elementary stuff, but I haven't been able to find answers in the Solvespace support literature. Can anyone clarify what I need to do?

Any help gratefully received!

You can use a difference operation to open up the inside, or you can create the sies and the top as thin extrusions.

Dimensions showing as REF is normal, as they can only be changed in the group of the sketch or extrusion.

As to the rest of your questions, I cannot help without the ..slvs, to see what you have done.

My mistake Andrew! Apologies, I forgot to attach the slvs file. Here it is. I show the front frame as being 60mm at the sides and 65mm at the top. It is 4mm thick. The rest of the box is much less - around 1.5mm thick.

Your problem is that you can only extrude a closed figure when creating a solid. If you see "Not closed....." your sketch will not extrude properly.. One way of achieving what you want is in the attached modified sketch.

That's really helpful. I can now see very clearly where I went wrong. Many thanks to you both!

Andrew, I have just returned to this exercise using the history column in your drawing as a guide. I kept getting a thick red line across the top of the frame where it butts onto the box. It has now disappeared but I'm not sure what I did to get rid of it! Can you suggest what might have been the problem?

Also, is there a way to assemble all of the active dimensions onto a single page, or do they each need to be adjusted via the sketch in which they were created?

Otherwise all is well and I am most grateful for the help received.
