How do I get a working version of solvespace 3.0 on Debian 10? (by Colin)
Hi
I've been looking for a more reliable 3D CAD program than FreeCAD, and I think I've found it in SolveSpace, however....

I'm running Debian GNU/Linux 10 with XFCE4, and the version available in the standard package manager is 2.3. I would really like the extra features available in 3.0.
The officially recommended route is either build from source, or install snap.
I took the snap root, and can now run solvespace 3.0 under snap, HOWEVER, I don't have the ability load or save files...which makes it somewhat useless!

What is the easiest way to get solvespace 3.0 successfully running on Debian 10?

From a bit of reading, you need to set up access permissions for snap packages.

If you want to try building, use git to pull down the sources.

Alternative upgrade to 11, or even testing. I have been using testing since jessie, and had no significant problems.

Thanks Andrew.
I've taken the plunge and upgraded to Debian 11 - a fairly painless process if you follow the guide of doing it in two steps.

Now I can run solvespace from the command line by typing either 'solvespace' or '/usr/bin/solvespace' and everything works as expected. :-)

The installation process has created an application start desktop item thus:

/usr/share/applications$ cat solvespace.desktop
[Desktop Entry]
Version=1.0
Name=SolveSpace
Comment=A parametric 2d/3d CAD
Exec=/usr/bin/solvespace
MimeType=application/x-solvespace
Icon=solvespace
Type=Application
Categories=Graphics
Keywords=parametric;cad;2d;3d;

which all seems to be in order, however, when I run it from the start menu, literally nothing happens!

I appreciate that this *may* be a debian question rather than a solvespace question, but thought I'd ask here in case anyone else has come across, and fixed this issue.

The entry matches mine, which works fine under testing LXDE. Have you restarted the desktop since the install, (reboot, or logout out and in).

Yes - done a reboot - still no joy.
I can make do with running it from a terminal - running from the app finder would just be slightly easier. I suspect it's a side effect of my upgrade from 10 to 11.

I have been playing with my Debian install, and while the first launch from the menu usually works, thereafter it often fails, but occasionaly launches

I had a launch failure from the terminal with the output of:

[xcb] Unknown sequence number while processing queue
[xcb] Most likely this is a multi-threaded client and XInitThreads has not been called
[xcb] Aborting, sorry about that.
solvespace: ../../src/xcb_io.c:269: poll_for_event: Assertion `!xcb_xlib_threads_sequence_lost' failed.
Aborted

I retried immediately and it launched O.K.
