Link STL files (experimental) (by Paul)
For those that can build solvespace from source, I just added the ability to link STL files. Doing so should force the model to triangle mesh, but you will get a point at the origin of the STL, a bounding box made of construction lines, and some number of edge vertexes that you can then do construction on.

Solvespace is not really a mesh editor, but it might be nice to make modifications to an STL and re-export it as such. Or you can link an STL and export it as HTML or similar fun.

I hope this feature is good enough. Any changes to it are likely to break models with linked STLs. That's why the PR was labeled experimental. Also, changes to the underlying STL are likely to break any model built with it. This is because there is no history in an STL and no unique identifiers for the verticies. However, the bounding box and origin verticies should be usable without breakage if the STL changes.

Nice. I think this is the first way to link "foreign" (not designed in SolveSpace) 3d models into SolveSpace files?

It's the second way. IDF files are already supported for circuit boards and that even creates NURBS surfaces.

I was looking at the STEP file reader in gcad3d which is also GPL3 licensed, but even that one is pretty big. That's the most wanted format.

Cool,

that really helps.

I use STEP as archive for my cad designs across multiple programs. So at the moment I have to draw most of the stuff from scratch in Solvespace. Import of these would be awesome.

One can dream :)
